ARTWORK
My art revolves heavily around the culture of southwest Louisiana, as well as my own life and experiences. I grew up here and have lived here most of my life and am very inspired by the people and places that make our culture so strangely beautiful and unique. I am captivated by our landscapes and try to incorporate them into many of my pieces-the golden fields, the rambunctious, desaturated skies, the flocks of black birds, the eerie swamps with the piercing cypress knees and hanging moss. I enjoy making self-portraits and telling pieces of my own tale through my work, as well. I continue to constantly be inspired by all that is around me and will keep drawing, painting, and photographing until i feel like i have nothing left to communicate and share, which could be a very long time.
Untitled-2009Self-portrait. It includes lines from a poem i wrote. It reads “When i happened, the house shook with fear before the paralysis settled in, and i crawled deep within my skin to tune out the screeching tires in the street, the screaming children, and the deafening bruises that bloomed so easily, like softness on fruit.” It has to do with a dark time in my life & the struggles i dealt w/at the time. I drew myself with a sort of blank stare because that’s how i felt at the time-empty, numb, hollow | Rainbows Wept Color On Streets-2008Katrina/Rainbows Wept Color All Over the Streets. this piece was inspired by the time i spent living in New Orleans, witnessing the unfortunate aftermath of Katrina's destruction and aggression. The rainbows part of title is a lyric from a song. I love the idea of rainbows dripping their once vibrant colors into flooded roads, a sort of symbol of something once so encouraging and cheerful that has fallen apart and been demolished | Cleoma-2012This is a portrait of Cleoma Falcon, who was the first woman to ever play and record Cajun music with her husband, Joe Falcon. She was a pioneer for women in our culture and, therefor, a very important figure. I wanted to pay homage to her by creating this piece. It was made with a pencil drawing, tin foil, inlay from the Acadian accordions my father builds, Cajun music stained with coffee and other liquid, and many pieces of different sized wood. | Across the Fields-2009This piece is just of a young boy in the fields of Louisiana in the summertime. It was inspired by a dream i had, and I prefer to let the viewers come up with their own narration or story for certain pieces, such as this one. It was made with several pencil drawings, a black and white photograph as the background, and a real wasp nest. | My Little World-2014This is a portrait of myself holding my little french niece when she was a baby. It was created with charcoal drawings, acrylic paint, a real cicada, a small, metal bird, painted tin foil, gold leaf, and inlay from the Acadian accordions my father builds. It was inspired by a painting i would see growing up in my home as a child and some unknown feeling I can’t describe from my past-a smell or sound or emotion that is both haunting and beautiful, comforting and lonesome. | |

Wilson-2012A pencil drawing of my older brother, Wilson, when he was a baby. Placed on book pages with dried leaves glued around. This was a christmas gift to my brother. | Flood-2010A self-portrait done on commission for a dear friend. I created it from a photo of myself roaming the streets one night after a heavy rainstorm. The roads had flooded and the water was nearly up to my knees. It is a pencil drawing with sand paper on book pages, india ink, and acrylic paint | Losing my Head-2003One of the first paintings i ever did in high school when i was about 15 years old. Acrylic and oil on canvas. | Never Say Never-2009Mixed Media. This piece has a very childlike feel to it, i think, but actually comes from a much darker place. It has to do with things i never thought i would do in my life but somehow my path lead there and i wound up in a very dark place because of it. So never say never because we never quite know how our destinies will unwind and who we will become and when and why | Mike-2005Drawing. Pencil on paper. | Roscoe-2004Drawing. Pencil on paper. |
