MARDI GRAS
Once a year in southwest Louisiana, my brother Joel throws a Mardi Gras run, or "courir," as we call it. This is a very traditional run that, despite Joel's attempt to keep it small, has attracted young people from all over the world who want to particpate in this weird, wild, beautifully surreal tradition. Costumes are required and most people make their own. It has been featured on HBO'S, Treme, as well as Anthony Bourdain's, No Reservations, and even The New York Times. Not only is it one hell of a party filled with whiskey, mud wrestling, horseback riding, and more, but it's also the perfect photo op set against Louisiana's golden fields and desaturated skies. Here are some of my photos from past years.
